Martin Cooper reenacting the first cell phone call
In 1973, Martin Cooper changed the modern society by inventing the first cell phone. He and a team from Motorola were successful in their endeavors to create the first mobile telephone. Little did they know that cell phones would grow to what they are now (Shiels 21 April 2003). The cell phone industry has grown very much, and the cell phone has improved. It has become lighter, faster, and now has many different functions than just calling.

How It Works

Cell phones use base stations to relay signals
Wireless networks operate using a grid. This grid divides regions and cities into smaller "cells". One cell might cover a few city blocks or 100 square miles. Each cell has a base station that contains an antenna which receives signals from your cell phone and relays them to other antennas in the vicinity of the number you are calling. The signal is then carried either through the land line or transmitted by another base station to the other cell phone ("How does a cell phone work?" Cell-Phone-Accessories.com).
